  • Kosher Camping. The not so rough roughing it!

Yehudah and Minnie Nosenchuk run organized camping trips to nature destinations throughout the country. While camping is fun, a great experience and a beautiful way for the entire family to be together in nature.  It is not so easy for most frum Jews. The Hillygram wanted to find out what is kosher camping is and if it is for everyone?  Yehudah Nosenchuk of Chuckie's Kosher Adventure Tours  answered a few questions he thaought would be of interest to the community.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         How did you get started?

287My wife has been camping with her family ever since she was
a child. When we met, she spoke a lot about her travel experiences. The
closest thing to camping that I had ever experienced was summer camp in the
Mountains of Pennsylvania and that was not something I was interested in as an
adult. We were only married a short while when we joined her family on a camping trip  to Yellowstone and GrandTeton National Parks. One week was all it took to get me hooked. By now, we have covered a good majority of the National Parks across the US and Canada.

Which is your favorite National Park?

Each National Park is so unique. Acadia NP, Maine has magnificent coasts, Redwood
NP has majestic trees, Yellowstone has unparalleled natural wonders including
geysers and other geothermal features and I have favorite parts in each park. However, the most awe-inspiring beauty I have ever seen is the Grand Canyon; it is just breathtaking! My two favorite hikes are Skyview in Cape Breton NP, Nova Scotia and Lymph, Bear and Dream Lakes in Rocky Mountain NP, Colorado.

    Why camping?

8-17-14 2066Camping is one of the best ways to immerse yourself and experience the nature up close. Gazing at a sky full of stars, relaxing at a campfire after an exhilarating day, andawaking to the sound of wind rustling through the trees and birds chirping. While camping,  many of the distractions that accompany our daily lives are absent.
Limited electricity, internet and phone service and other distractions
will allow you to spend uninterrupted quality time with your group.

    IMG 0659

    8-17-14 2213

    Why did you start Chuckie's

    Kosher Adventures?

Aside from being popular vacation destinations, these outstanding natural wonders foster an appreciation of Hashem's creation is very uplifting. Traveling to these
destinations as a frum jew, however, can be challenging. Remote locations with no availability of kosher food and minyanim prevent many observant jews from being able to enjoy them. People are constantly telling us, "We'd love to go to these places but what about a minyan?  Food? How do you get all the gear there?" Our service helps to alleviate all of these concerns and  make camping and visiting national parks easy and accessible to the frum camper.

There are lots of travel services out there, what make yours
    different?

Our model is very unique. We allow you to have privacy as a family or group while still IMG 0609enjoying the convenience of being a part of a group. Each family or group stays on their own campsite with their own picnic table and fire pit. Your hosts (us) stay on a large host site where minyanim- take place and the meals are cooked. You are free to take your meals to your private campsite to enjoy. You can also make your own private campfire. The hardest part about camping is schlepping the gear and cooking in the outdoors. We take care of that for you. You will arrive to a campsite that is set up with all the gear you will need and there's no need for you to worry about the meals – we've got them covered. We attract all different types of groups: families with young children, retired couples, men whose wives are not adventurous as they are and women whose husbands are not adventurous.

    What is your busiest season?

The summer is the most popular time to travel, but we run trips throughout the year. In the
winter, we choose destinations that are in warmer climates and have some cabin-based trips

with heating. For example, we have a cabin trip scheduled to Grand Canyon/Sedona over
Thanksgiving weekend. The trip will include a Shabbos. We will be staying in
beautiful cabins right outside of Sedona. This will be a good opportunity for people who love

nature, but are not ready to rough it out in a tent.

acadiaAn overal thought you want to leave Hillygram readers with?

I wish everyone had the opportunity to take advantage of the amazing wonder, beauty and

the wholesome experience that one has when visiting nature.

  • Local Los Angeles Leaders Honored and recognized on Capitol Hill during American Jewish Heritage Month

Jewish Contributions Celebrated on Capitol Hill

    by The Friedlander Group

The Kennedy Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building was packed with more than 200 legislators, Jewish leaders and their supporters who participated in a bi-partisan celebration of American Jewish Heritage Month to recognize the many contributions of the Jewish people to the United States.

As President Ronald Reagan declared in 1981, when he first established Jewish Heritage week, "American Jews have contributed significantly to the spiritual and cultural elevation of our society since the founding of our Nation. Jewish immigrants and their descendants have brought dignity and distinction to every field of American endeavor. Our Jewish citizens have served America by fighting for her freedom, building her industry, striving for her goals, and nurturing her dreams." In 2006, President George W. Bush proclaimed May as Jewish American Heritage Month, an initiative led by Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the late Senator Arlen Specter. Each subsequent President has continued this tradition.  The Friedlander Group and Project Legacy have been sponsoring a special tribute on Capitol Hill for the last several years.

Among those feted this week were Holocaust survivor  and author of the acclaimed book, A Candle in the Heart, Judith Kallman of Greenwich, CT, who was lauded for her efforts to convince students to stop the hate by Senator Richard Blumenthal; Chief Rabbi of the Bukharan Jewish community, Itzhak Yehoshua, the President of the Bukharian Rabbinical Council of America, who immigrated to the United States in 1987, and successfully built the American Bukharian community from what was once a small group into a vast community with over 65,000 members; an accomplishment lauded in a Senate Resolution introduced in honor of Jewish Heritage Month. It was pointed put by Senator Blumenthal and others that the "Bukharian community has ancient roots in Central Asia, and after the fall of the Soviet Union, many immigrated to the United States seeking a better life free from oppression. Under Rabbi Yehoshua's leadership, the Bukharian community demonstrates how immigrants integrate into American life while preserving their unique culture and traditions".

To recognize the importance of civil rights, the program featured Mark Meyer Appel, founder of The Bridge Multicultural and Advocacy Project, an organization that unites people of every racial, ethnic, cultural and religious background. As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the "Bloody Sunday " Selma March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge an event that was a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement, in which countless Jews were involved. Being true to that legacy, American Jews like Mark Meyer Appel remain devoted to advancing civil rights for all Americans and bridging the divide between different communities. Indeed, Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III, (D-Mass) who made that presentation and appropriate in light of him being the grandson of Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, a major figure in the civil rights movement.

Also honored was AISH International, one of the largest Jewish outreach organizations of its kind in the world, which aims to connect Jews to their ancient heritage in a warm, non-judgmental environment. In the words, Senate Resolution AISH was singled out for praise for reinforcing "that in the United States, people may freely connect with their culture and religious heritage and contribute to the fabric of life in the United States". Several of their supporters received special recognition including: Ruth Hyman, Bob and Michelle Diener, Gary M. and Pennie Abramson

Emceed with a strong dose of humor by Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, Executive Vice President of the New York Board of Rabbis, and Greg Rosenbaum who chairs the Jewish Heritage Month Celebration the event included a list of impressive speakers from both houses of Congress and both sides of the aisle. The standing ovation of the day was given to Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights hero who came to the microphone and remembered the marches in the south, reciting the words of the Bible and the lyrics of the classic, "Let My People Go". He reminded those in the audience of the days when Jews marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. in the fight for human rights, and recalled three young men he knew who did not die in Vietnam. They did not die in the Middle East or in another foreign country fighting for freedom-they were arrested and lynched fighting for freedom in the United States.  They were Andrew Goodman, Mickey Schwerner and James Earl Chaney, lynched by the KKK in 1964.

Another speech that earned a standing ovation was the speech by Mrs. Kallman. As a child, she and her siblings became fugitives of the Third Reich after they witnessed their parents and older siblings get into a cattle car headed for Auschwitz. She survived thanks to the kindness of strangers and ended her odyssey from Czechoslovakia, Hungary, England, and Israel to come to America, where, she said, "Here I discovered that life is indeed beautiful and that I can enjoy my family and love deeply. I owe that ability to my parents, of blessed memory, who lavished the best of their love, hope and care upon me from the moment I appeared in their lives. And I owe it to the freedom I found in America, a freedom from fear that allowed me to raise my children in peace, to practice Judaism without shame. How does one say 'thank you' for that?"

Other speakers were Sen. Bill Cassidy, Sen.Tim Kaine, Sen. Kelly Ayotte , Sen. Ron Johnson, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Rep. Eliot Engel, Sen. Ben Sasse, Rep. Ted Deutch; Rep. Lee Zeldin.

  • WARNING: SCAM ALERT - "YOU HIT MY CAR GIVE ME MONEY"
    WARNING: SCAM ALERT
From a community member who would like to warn the community
"As I was leaving Café Eilat 7/2/15 and driving down Detroit St, a car began wildly beeping at me.  I pulled over to talk to them. The passanger accused me of "grazing" their bumper and running away.He told me he had called the police and reported a HIT AND RUN"..I had NO IDEA what they were talking about but the spokesman  showed me the scratch on their car and then the corresponding white scratch on my car. He proceeded to "call" the police and cancel the hit and run. (I should have realized then how ridiculous that was- like he had Speed Dial to the Police!!) He asked about my insurance and I told him I was going to call my husband. He tried to convince me not to call my husband, Then he tried to negotiate so I wouldn't call the insurance (since he had teenage sons and his rates would go up). We finally settled on an amount ($240) and he said I needed to go to the bank and cash a check. I wanted to give him a check but he said  "you don't need my name and I don't need yours". In the end, they followed me to the bank but they couldn't cash my personal check because I only had a business account. I just offered him the money in my wallet and he took $220 and drove off. He was driving a white and brown Mini Cooper. The driver was a young Hispanic looking guy and the spokesman was a 50ish year old white guy..Basically, they just intimidate you and force you to pay them off."   7/1

    TIPS
The following are important tips to avoid being the victim of a scam:
    1. Exchange information with the other driver(s)
    2. Be aware of potential witnesses
    3. Carry a notepad and disposable camera if you do not have a phone that takes pictures.
    4. Write down license numbers, CDL and plates
    5. Be wary of unsolicited tow truck operators

WANTED: "KOSHER HAMS"
You are invited to join a team of Federal Communication Commission licensed amateur radio operators to provide backup and supportive communications capabilities for Hatzolah of Los Angeles and the community.

Following the 1994 Northridge quake, the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, and severe weather across the country, regular communication systems have failed. Around the world, ham radio teams have stepped in at these critical times to keep vital information flowing.
Should a major disaster take out Hatzolah's primary radio system, phone lines get tied up, or cell towers become inundated with too many callers, this team will be available to provide local, regional, and global communications for emergencies, health and wellness, and other missions.
If you are already a licensed amateur radio operator and would like more information or are interested in becoming licensed, email Haim Hirsch at This email address is being protected from spambots.
