LA SHABBAT PROJECT – Join thousands of women

Oct 20, 2020 Article

(Below is a message to the community from the  LA SHABBOS PROJECT team)

For the past several years, as part of the LA Shabbat Project, we’ve had the privilege to share the beauty of the mitzvah of baking challah for shabbos with hundreds of women. This year, we are obviously unable to join together in person to bake challah or to have shabbos meals together. And yet, we did not want the year to go by without doing something.. Especially given all that’s going on in the world, with so many feeling so isolated, it seemed to us more important than ever to help connect Jewish women with each other. We’ve been inspired by the idea of helping to bring literal light into people’s homes during this time of darkness.. As those of us who light shabbos candles know, lighting candles on Friday night brings both physical and spiritual light into our homes. Like making Challah, lighting Shabbat candles is one of the mitzvos specifically for women. And so, we thought it would be a wonderful idea to help more women participate in the mitzvah of lighting Shabbos candles. To that end, we have organized kits which will be delivered, for free, to any not-yet-lighting-SHabbos-candles women in the LA area who would like one. Each kit contains candles for one year, matches, votive holders, a bracha card and a card with local candle lighting times.

Please, reach out to your less affiliated friends, relatives, and neighbors and see if they might be interested in joining in the mitzvah of lighting Shabbos candles. Send them the video we produced about the beauty of lighting Shabbos candles. All you need to do is send us their address and we will drop off the kit before the official Shabbos of this year’s Shabbat Project, November 6-7.

Join with us as we empower women to Be the Light- bring the beauty of Shabbos candles into their own homes!
